5 Realistic Morning Rituals

We all know the benefits of rituals and taking time for self-care. But let's be honest, most of us are rolling out of bed and rushing out of the house in the morning. So it can be quite a challenge to make time to meditate, make it to morning yoga or enjoy a fully cooked meal. I work from home and I still find it to be challenging at times with morning meetings and calls. 

It's taken me a long time to figure out mini ritual practices to help me get centered for the day ahead. Fortunately I now have a few go-to rituals to help me clear the mental fog, find some inner peace and get motivated for the day ahead. I'm sharing them with you down below. Each one is simple and takes less than 5 minutes, in most cases less than that. 

1. Make Your Morning Coffee With Intention
Everything you do can be turned into a ritual or a form of meditation and your morning cup of joe is no exception. Plus you can do this with your daily stop at Starbucks or coffee you've brewed at home. It makes no difference where the coffee came from. What's important is taking a few moments a day to enjoy it. 

Simply take a few sips of your coffee and close your eyes. Notice how the coffee makes you feel. Feel the warmth going down your throat and through your chest; gently warming your entire body as it makes its way to your stomach. Continue to notice as much as you can. Take a deep breath and see if you can pick out any particular flavors or simply savor the aroma. Hold it in your hands and allow yourself to be comforted. 

Start with 30 seconds. Then the next day do 45, then the next, a minute or however long you have to take a few moments to be present. Do it in your car in the parking lot if you have to. Again, it isn't about the coffee. Do it with tea, hot chocolate, milk, whatever. The point is carving out a few moments, even if only a few seconds to be in the moment. 

2. Use An Aromatherapy Diffuser
This one has become one of my favorite things to do in the morning. When I wake, one of the first things that I do is turn on my diffuser. I make a nice sized bottle of a refreshing and invigorating blend that I keep on my nightstand alongside my diffuser. Before going to bed, I refresh the water and add 30 or so drops to my diffuser. I simply hit the on button to 30 minutes when I wake up the next morning and continue getting ready. As I move about, the fragrance fills the room and slowly lifts me out of that all too familiar morning fog. 

Try uplifting scents like: Bergamot, clary Sage, cypress, grapefruit, lemon, lime, peppermint, ylang ylang. 

3. Affirmation Wake Up Calls
This one takes the least amount of time of anything on the list but makes the biggest difference in my opinion. Make use of your reminders app on your phone by creating a new list (mine is called "I Am Capable Of Anything"). Add a few reminders, each one with an affirmation or motivational quote. Set your reminders to repeat each day, a minute or two after your alarm goes off. Read them out loud (or to yourself if you prefer), check the box and you're done. 

I've completed this practice everyday for the past year and I'm always amazed by how much of a difference it makes. I've gotten results with almost every affirmation (the way you phrase them is key, but that's a whole other post) I've used and when I feel like I've accomplished my affirmations, I delete them all and make new ones that are more aligned with my current goals. 

4. Daily Tarot Pulls
Let me be honest with you guys, I read tarot for clients professionally and I have somewhere around 120 tarot and oracle decks. I DO NOT pull a tarot card everyday. I forget all of the time because most of the boxes are too large to keep on my nightstand. I tried keeping them in my purse and on my desk but alas, I get busy and well, you know how that goes? 

Fortunately tarot has caught up with technology. It is about to be 2018 after all. There are several apps available now that offer daily pull options, conveniently located on your phone. I've actually been able to remember pulling cards daily since downloading The Luminous Spirit Tarot app. I keep it right next to my Instagram app which, not going to lie, I look at several times a day. Then I see the tarot app and think "oh yea, pull a card!" Simple.

5. Morning Movements
The body can get stiff from laying in bed overnight. It's important to get your "Chi" (in the voice of Danny Rand, lol) or "life force" going before you get your day going. Doing so will help to kickstart your body and mind by getting your blood flowing. This helps to loosen muscles, bring oxygen to the brain as well as other major organs, and it promotes grounding so that you can be more present in the body. 

Try movements like 3 or 4 cat/cow stretches, flexing and contracting your calve muscles, forward folds, rolling your shoulders or making figure eights with your hips.
